Bangladesh is the eighth largest mobile market in the world

 



According to the sixth census, the current population of Bangladesh is about 17 crores. As such, it is the 92nd largest country in the world by area and the eighth largest in the world by population. After the implementation of the digital plan, 56 percent of the total population of the country uses smartphones.


Association of Mobile Telecom Operators of Bangladesh (AMTOB) says that 98.5 percent of the total population is covered by 4G. Besides, 21 crore 90 lakh customers are currently using Mobile Financial Services (MFS). Moreover, 56 percent of the total population is using smartphones. Bangladesh is the eighth largest mobile market in the world. The mobile telecom sector contributes 8 percent to the national gross domestic product in this market segment.


However, BTRC’s data on mobile phone handsets released in January at the end of 2023 shows that 81.20 percent of locally produced mobile phones are feature phones and 18.80 percent are smart phones. The total number of phones produced is 18 lakh 92 thousand.


AMTOB’s data till December 2023 shows that in 2008, the number of mobile subscribers in the country was 191.38 million. In 15 years, the growth of mobile users has been 107 percent. Now the country has 54 thousand 960 sites. 98.5 percent of network is under 4G coverage now. And 56 percent of those enjoying this 4G facility have smart phones.


According to the report of the Association of Mobile Operators, the number of mobile internet users among SIM users is 117.4 million. This rate exceeds the total population as one uses multiple SIMs. Mobile internet usage has grown by 65 percent in the last 15 years. Users use more than 6 and a half GB of data.
